What Is Supported Independent Living?

OCL’s Supported Independent Living (SIL) enables people with developmental disabilities who want to and have the ability to live in their own home with support. OCL’s highly trained staff provide support to people to find an apartment, financial coaching, life skills coaching (cooking, cleaning, hygiene, etc.), enrolling in school (high school or post-secondary), employment preparation, public transportation, family planning, apartment safety planning and emergency training.

Different housing options may emerge in your plan to meet various requirements. We can assist with the following:

  • Living at home with family, provide supports to engage in community activities
  • Secure an apartment and provide support to live independently.

What Does the OCL SIL program do?

In simple terms, OCL sends SIL employees to help people at home achieve the goals and outcomes identified in their Person-Centered Plan. This is done to help improve skills in order to live as independently as possible.

It can involve assistance and supervision with everyday duties such as personal care and food preparation. Or, it can involve support to achieve greater community inclusion. It helps people be as self-sufficient as possible while also developing their talents.

Who Benefits from SIL?

OCL supports people with developmental disabilities who are 18 years and older. 

OCL uses a Person-Centered Approach in planning SIL support. We meet with the person and their circle of influence which can include family and friends. During our Person-Centered discussion, we will assess a variety of factors to determine whether SIL is the right choice, including the following:

  • Goals and outcomes
  • Unique conditions and requirements
  • Independence, self-sufficiency and capacity-building requirements
  • Information, reports and evaluations from healthcare providers
  • One-on-one assistance
  • Additional housing options and lifestyle alternatives

What Support Will OCL Provide?

Support is provided to increase independence and includes the following:

  • Preparing and cooking meals
  • Personal hygiene measures such as bathing
  • Administering medicine
  • Developing the ability to use public transportation
  • Social gatherings with other roommates
  • Transportation to appointments and recreational activities
